The minimization of the total surface energy is reformulated into a variational problem. As the size of the roughness becomes small, we show convergence of the minimizer. The limiting minimizer and effective contact angle are explicitly calculated to verify the Wenzel equation.

Analysis for Wetting on Rough Surfaces by a Three-dimensional Phase Field Model∗

In this paper, we consider the derivation of the modified Wenzel’s and Cassie’s equations for wetting phenomena on rough surfaces from a three-dimensional phase field model. We derive an effective boundary condition by asymptotic two-scale homogenization technique when the size of the roughness is small. The modified Wenzel’s and Cassie’s equations for the apparent contact angles on the rough s...

Derivation of the Wenzel and Cassie Equations from a Phase Field Model for Two Phase Flow on Rough Surface

In this paper, the equilibrium behavior of an immiscible two phase fluid on a rough surface is studied from a phase field equation derived from minimizing the total free energy of the system. When the size of the roughness becomes small, we derive the effective boundary condition for the equation by the multiple scale expansion homogenization technique. The Wenzel and Cassie equations for the a...

Wall-bounded multiphase flows of N immiscible incompressible fluids: Consistency and contact-angle boundary condition

We present an effective method for simulating wall-bounded multiphase flows consisting of N (N > 2) immiscible incompressible fluids with different densities, viscosities and pairwise surface tensions. The N-phase physical formulation is based on a modified thermodynamically consistent phase field model that is more general than in a previous work, and it is developed by considering the reducti...

On Coherent Structures of Turbulent Open-channel Flow Above a Rough Bed

Present study examines turbulent structures of a rough bed open-channel flow in the context of deterministic approach. Instantaneous velocity field is measured in different hydraulic conditions using two dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in vertical plane and Stereoscopic PIV in horizontal plane. Different techniques and quantities such as swirl strength, two-point and cross-correlat...

"Lock-and-key" geometry effect of patterned surfaces: wettability and switching of adhesive force.

A rough surface can be a regular (engineered surface), a random (irregular rough surface), or an intermediate case (hierarchical rough surface). Whichever case is used for wettability, a truly superhydrophobic surface exhibits not only a high contact angle (>150 8) but also a low-contact-angle hysteresis (sliding angle). Quéré et al. theoretically described how contact-angle hysteresis generate...
